Cuernavaca
City of
Eternal Spring and the capital of Morelos; a
resort city, that doesn’t need sea or sand. A city that
combines narrow, colonial streets with wide avenues that
beckon local residents, Mexican tourists, expatriates and
students of all ages. Cuernavaca, a city that invites you to
immerse in the sights, sounds and language of Mexico.
Less
than 50 miles south of the Mexico City Airport, Cuernavaca is
‘another world.’ With average temperatures of 80 during
the day and cool evenings, Cuernavaca is delightful.
Capital of the state
of Morelos, Cuernavaca has been known for
centuries as the City of Eternal Spring.
The name Cuernavaca
stems from the náhuatl word "Cuauhnáhuac"
meaning "near the trees".
With an altitude of
1542 meters (5059 feet), Cuernavaca's climate is mild with
warm, sunny days and cool nights.
Although Morelos is
one of Mexico's smallest states (4,950 sq. kms or 1,820 sq.
mi.), there are distinct differences in climate due to a
variance in elevation ranging from 1,000 to about 3,300 mts
(2,900-9,800 ft).
In the north-western
part of the state, into the mountains near Cuernavaca,
temperatures can be substantially lower, both during the
daytime and at night, than in the southern and south-eastern
areas around Cuautla and Jojutla.
The rainy season
usually extends from June through October. Energizing thunderstorms and massive rainfall,
while frequently occuring in the evening hours, may surprise
you at other times of the day. Carry an umbrella or hat. Days are generally warm and sunny, with the
temperature rising significantly in May, just before the rains
begin.
In the "City of
Eternal Spring" are hidden behind
their high walls and year-round blossoming vegetation and
sub-tropical gardens. It is an approximate 1 hour, 45 minute
drive from Mexico City over an excellent toll highway.
Cuernavaca is located
in a state rich with archeological ruins and haciendas,
impressive scenery and natural spas. The opportunity for
interesting side trips are many, all being within only a
couple of hours drive, at most, from the capital.
Cuernavaca is renown
for its excellent Spanish schools and immersion language
programs. Most of these schools offer
cultural activities and programs extending far beyond regular
Spanish language courses.
